My Top 7 Free Products for the Thrifty Internet Marketer
Monday, June 14, 2010 11:46Here is a list of my top 7 freebie tools:
Wordpress
The most important free piece of software for the Internet Marketer is blogging software.
You need a blog so that:
People can learn all about you.
People can engage with you.
People can learn from you.
You can gain subscribers (although there are other methods).
So what do you use? In my opinion, Wordpress is by far the most superior blogging platform.
Need some advice on setting up Wordpress check this article out 8 must dos for a successful Wordpress blog
Want to learn about Wordpress sign up here for my free Wordpress course - it’s aimed at Virtual Assistants.
OpenOffice
As an Internet Marketer you will want to create ebooks that you can giveaway as an incentive for a person to give up their name and email address.
You don’t need to purchase Microsoft products when there is a fantastic free alternative.
Openoffice is opensource (free) software created by Sun Microsystems with the following products:
WRITER is a fully equipped word processor or desktop publisher software.
IMPRESS is a tool for creating effective multimedia presentations.
MATH is a tool for creating equations and formulae for your documents.
DRAW is a drawing package.
CALC is the spreadsheet program.
BASE is the database software.
You can save the documents in numerous formats.
Once you have created your ebook you can use OpenOffice to export your document to a PDF.
PDF995
So you need a PDF converter with a bit more functionality. Perhaps you want to combine a number of PDFs together?
Pdf995 offers three products Pdf995, PdfEdit995 and Signature995. These are all free to download but will display a rather annoying sponsor page in your web browser each time you run the software. You can pay for the software and the sponsor page will not appear.
Below is a video on combining PDFs.
Filezilla FTP
Now that you have your ebook ready, you need to upload it to your server.
Filezilla FTP is one of the best FTP programs I have used and it’s free. It’s easy to use and only took me a couple of minutes to download.
Jing
Need some screenshots for your posts/articles then Jing is the software to have. It has been created by the makers of Camtasia, Techsmith so you know it’s going to be good
CamStudio
Every Internet Marketer must, at some point, create some videos. I have and if I can do it, so can you.
Seriously, if you have read my 25 Things You Didn’t Know About Me post, you will notice that one of my points mentions that I am shy. The thought of me doing videos turned my stomach and I hate the sound of my own voice.
I started off using CamStudio and edited the videos in Windows Movie Maker, which comes free with the Microsoft Office Suite, XP SP2 or later.
I started to have a few quality issues when I dragged the videos into Windows Movie Maker so I signed up for the free version of Camtasia.
I am now hooked on Camtasia and have purchased it.
CamStudio is really good though and is a good starting point.
GIMPshop
GIMPshop is a free program intended to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop.
I’ve not really had much of a chance to use this, as I have PhotoImpact on my PC and that works fine for me. Try it out and let me know if it’s any good.
Some of the above software has been invaluable to me and I hope it is to you.
Please feel free to add a comment below and let me know what is your favourite totally free software.

Have you ever considered SSuite Office as a free alternative to MS Office or even OpenOffice?
Their software also doesn’t need to run on Java or .NET, like MS Office and so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small, efficient, and easy to use.

Hi Angela
I have never heard of SSuite Office but thanks for sharing it as an alternative.
I personally don’t think you can beat OpenOffice, it’s a quality free product. OK, it might be a biggish download but well worth it.
Anybody else used SSuite Office and would like to share their experiences?

Hi Allan & Dawn
I was using Camstudio quite happily until I was having some quality issues when dragging the videos into Movie Maker.
I am glad that I purchased Camtasia though and never have any quality issues now.
Nice to see a couple working together.

Hi Christina,
I’m an Alex Jeffreys coaching student as well. I thought I would do some blog hopping. So when I checked out your blog, I saw the word “free”. Well that’s my favorite word, it’s right up there with ‘clearance’.
Thanks for sharing your list. All of the items are listed at a great price.

Always great to meet a fellow Alex Jeffreys student. Thanks for hopping over.
Yeah, I love the word free too. It’s even better when they are free and good quality

I will do a bit of hopping now. See you in a mo.
Cheers

Thank you Christina!
The only one I didn’t have was PDF995. Isn’t it funny how things happen? I’m about to combine PDF’s to create new products and this is just perfect!
Thanks again,
Lesley
